Special Housing Requests

Policy and Procedure

Policy:
Students with a diagnosed disability or health concern that may impact residential living may submit a special housing request through the Office of Residence Life. Although York College has a wide range of residential housing, there are a limited number of spaces available for special accommodations, such as single rooms. Therefore, special housing requests for students with documented disabilities or health concerns will be assessed on a case-by-case basis in a collaborative process with the Directors of the following Departments: Office of Residence Life, Counseling Services, and Health Services.

Procedure:
Students should refer to the Special Housing Request Form available through the Office of Residence Life web pages to activate the process. First year students must submit the Special Housing Requests with the supporting documentation no later than May 30th of the incoming year. Continuing York College students must submit the application for Special Housing Request by March 15th each year they are in attendance.

Special requests are considered based on those with the most critical medical need, the severity of the condition, and on the availability of spaces. Priority will be given to students with a life-threatening medical condition impacting their ability to perform activities of daily living. The request must be an integral component of a treatment plan prescribed by a medical professional qualified to treat the particular condition. Students with non-medical conditions will only be considered when or if space becomes available. Conditions such as Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorders, or Psychological Disorders generally do not warrant special housing.
