What About That Rock?
The Rock, an imposing chunk of York County limestone, was brought to campus by enterprising members of the Class of 1972. Standing in solitary prominence between the Student Union building and Wolf Gymnasium, the Rock (or “Old Spart” as it was known to some students) was painted a deep Spartan green color each spring and then adorned with the names and messages of the graduating class. The layers of paint accumulated each year, adding the weight of an important new tradition to the mass of the Rock itself.
In the summer of 1996, the Rock was dropped accidentally while being transported during a construction project. Weathered and cracked by years of exposure to the elements the Rock shattered into numerous pieces, leaving many students and alumni concerned that an annual ritual might end.
College officials acquired another rock of similar dimensions and placed it as close to the original location as possible. And so, a York College tradition continues.
