Schedules & Dates

  • Schedules will be emailed to each captain, placed on the bulletin board across from the Rock Wall and posted online following the last captain’s meeting
  • Regular season play will begin on Thursday, October 22nd with playoffs to follow
  • Regular season games will be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights
  • Playoff games may be scheduled for any night of the week

 Teams

  • A team will play with four (4) players on the court at a time, although they may have up to six (6) players listed on the roster
  • A Co-Ed team must have at least two (2) females on the court at all times
    • If starting with only two or three players, then only one (1) female player must be present
  • A team may start and play a game with as few as two (2) players. If for any reason (including ejection) the number of players drops below two (2), the team will be forced to forfeit.
  • Teams will be limited to one (1) Club Volleyball player
    • Varsity volleyball players may not participate

Forfeits

  • If two (2) players are not present at the scheduled start time it will be considered a forfeit

 Equipment

  • Proper athletic shoes are required
  • All wallyball equipment will be provided for each game
  • All members of a team must wear their team’s assigned color
  • Participants will not be allowed to play in street clothes
  • Only water is allowed beyond the turnstiles 

Rules of the Game

  • Best of three games (2 of 3) wins the match
  • In the first two games, the first team to reach twenty-five (25) points with a two-point advantage wins, with a cap of thirty (30) points. If the score is tied 24-24, then the first team to gain a two point advantage is the winner, or the first to thirty (30) points
  • If a third game is necessary, the first team to reach fifteen (15) points is declared the winner. If the score is tied 14-14, then the first team to gain a two point advantage is declared the winner The cap for the third game is 20 points
  • Rallying scoring will be used for all games
  • Each team is allowed one 30-second time-out per game

Start of Game

  • Before each game begins, the supervisor will call the captains together for a “coin toss”
  • The winning captain has the option of serving first or choosing on which side of the court their team will start play. Once the decision has been made, the second option is given to the captain of the opposing team.
  • Teams will switch sides of the court after each game
  • Serves to start the game will also switch between teams for each game
  • If a third game is necessary, another coin toss will take place.

 Substitutions and Rotations

  • Teams are allowed to make as many substitutions as they would like
  • Substitutions may only be made when play has stopped
  • If a player is ejected from the game, they may NOT be replaced. They must leave the playing area immediately
  • Upon winning the serve from their opponent, the entire team must rotate clockwise 

Serving

  • The player in the back right corner of their side of the net is the server.
  • The server can be no more than three (3) feet from the back wall on the serve.
  • Servers are allowed only one toss per serve
    • If the first toss is bad, you must allow the ball to drop without making contact, only then will a reserve be awarded
    • If any contact is made, the serve will be given to the other team
    • There may be more than one reserve during any term of service, but not consecutively
  • The server should wait until everyone on the opposing team is ready
  • A serve may hit a side wall only one time before being played by a member of the opposing team
  • A serve is considered a fault and given to the opposing team if:
    • The server is more than three (3) feet from the back wall
    • It touches a teammate, ceiling or the back wall
    • Does not cross over the net
  • If a fault occurs, the opposing team will receive the serve and a point
  • Upon winning a serve, the entire team must rotate clockwise 

Playing the Ball

  • There is a maximum of three (3) hits allowed (intentional and unintentional)
  • The ball may be hit with any part of the body on or above the knee
  • Players may not have successive contact with the ball, unless after a block
  • The ball may be played off the net by either team
    • If Team A is trying to get the ball over the net and it hits the net and comes back to their side they can still play it provided it wasn’t a serve or their 3rd hit.
  • A player may not attack the ball on the opponent’s side of the net
    • If the ball is hit above the spiker’s side of the net and their hand crosses over the net without touching an opponent or the net, it is not a fault
    • When attempting a block, a player can reach over the net but cannot make contact with the ball until the opponent strikes the ball in an attempt to send the ball over the net.
  • A player cannot cross under the net onto the opponents side of the court
  • If a player make contact with the net it may result in a point for the opposing team
  • Any ball that crosses through the openings between the net and the wall will be considered a fault and result in a point for the opposing team.

 Illegal Contact

  • Carrying: anytime the ball comes to rest in a player’s hands, it is considered an illegal hit
    • Scooping, lifting, pushing or allowing the ball to roll on the body is considered carrying
  • Bumping with two separate hands
    • Hands must be together
  • Double Hit: When any one player makes contact with the ball two (2) consecutive times (excluding blocking exception)
  • The opposing team is not allowed to attack or block on the serve

Faults

  • A double fault occurs when players on opposing teams simultaneously commit faults.
    • The referee will direct a replay
  • If faults by opponents occur at approximately the same time, the referee shall determine which fault occurred first and penalize that fault
    • If this can’t be determined, a double fault will be declared
  • If the serving team commits a fault the receiving team will receive a point and the serve
  • If the receiving team commits a fault the serving team will receive a point and continue to serve

Scoring

  • To earn a point, one of the following must occur:
    • the ball must come in contact with the ground
    • your opponent must have an illegal contact
  • Upon winning the serve, the entire team must rotate clockwise

Protests

  • Player eligibility is the only protest that will be considered
  • Protests should be brought to the attention of the official prior to the start of the contest
  • Protests must also be made in writing to the Intramural Staff by 12:00 pm the following business day. If this process is not followed, the protest becomes invalid

Player Conduct

  • Players are expected to uphold a certain level of conduct for all Intramural activities
  • Each team will be judged and graded on their level of conduct for each contest
