Frequently Asked Questions

15. Are there opportunities to study abroad during my four years at York?
Each year more and more York students are realizing the benefits of studying in a setting apart from the U.S.A. Presently, York College offers its students opportunities for studies in Mexico and the United Kingdom. Other opportunities can be pursued where a college other than York is the sponsoring institution.

16. Why is York College relatively inexpensive in comparison to other private colleges?

York College enjoys national recognition as one of the best managed financially sound educational institutions in the nation. The College and its Board of Trustees are philosophically committed to the idea of cost containment. For this reason, York carries no debt on its facilities and manages a well-invested endowment fund. Focusing on the overwhelming importance of classroom instruction, York faculty members traditionally teach a full course load of 12 credits per semester. These factors plus generous financial support from the community have led to York's sound reputation as a "best buy." In addition, York College has recently been dubbed a "hidden gem" in a recent Washington Post article.

17. If I decide to attend a community college for one year and then transfer to York, at what point in the admissions process will I learn which credits will transfer to York?

Transfer students are welcomed from regionally accredited community colleges, as well as four-year institutions. If a transfer student is admitted to York (a minimum grade point average of 2.0 is required for most programs), a printed credit evaluation will be completed by the Registrar's Office.

18. What type of religious services are available to students?

Protestant and Catholic services are offered at York College's Brougher Chapel, located directly on campus. In addition to regular services, special events are planned. For our Jewish students transportation can be obtained to attend the temple or synagogue located in York. Religious organizations include Hillel, Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship and the Newman Club.

19. Are drugs and alcohol a problem at York College?

York College does not permit students to use or possess alcohol or illegal drugs on campus. This policy is regulated through the resident assistants in each housing facility.

20. How many students live in college housing?

Approximately 65% of the student body reside in some type of college housing or in the surrounding community. College housing includes traditional style residence halls, suites, apartments, and college-owned homes on the perimeter of campus.

21. Is college housing guaranteed?

Freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus unless living with a parent or guardian. Beginning junior year, students may request to move off-campus. Most off-campus housing is conveniently located adjacent to campus. Students may live on campus all four years as long as the housing deposit is paid before the deadline.
