Phillip Barnett ’11 (Hummelstown, Pa.) works as part of a team that supports a growing international market at the "Sweetest Place on Earth."
Phillip is employed by The Hershey Company as an associate controls engineer as part of Hershey's Global Operations Engineering, which provides support to Hershey facilities worldwide. He recently took a rotational assignment that involved traveling to Shanghai, China, to support operations fueled by recent growth in the Asian market.
Prior to his current position, Phillip interned in several of Hershey’s plants where he worked in factories including Y&S Candies, where Twizzlers are produced, H.B. Reese Company and the new state-of-the-art West Hershey Plant located in Hershey, Pa.
“I worked with contractors to order, install and commission new manufacturing lines and traveled to plants to provide electrical support,” Phillip said.
He also interned with both Alcon Inc., a global medical company with a focus on optometry, and Colombia Boiler Company, which designs and manufactures quality boilers for residential, commercial and industrial applications.
“The co-op program at YCP is by far one of the most beneficial things that the engineering major offers,” he said. “Very few other schools offer such an involved experience.”
During Phillip’s time in the Electrical Engineering program, he also had the opportunity to work in a team-based environment to build an autonomous robot and learn about renewable energy resources using a hands-on learning approach.
“Evaluate yourself early,” he advised current students. “Find your strengths and weaknesses, and tailor your education to that. Also, find a challenging internship that allows you to work with others and push the envelope.”
