As the director of consumer insights and planning at New York’s famous Madison Square Garden, Kerrilyn Curtin ’03 (Manorville, N.Y.) has a front-row seat to all the action.
“Working at ‘The Garden’ has provided many memorable moments away from my desk, including the retirement of New York Ranger Adam Graves and the addition of Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks,” she said.
Her time at ‘The Garden’ has also been highlighted with many speaking engagements at conferences, and colleges and universities, as well as the National Direct Marketing Association’s “2007 NCDM Database Excellence Award” for outstanding achievement in database marketing.
“My internship provided the first step to this great career,” said Kerrilyn. “During the summer between my junior and senior years, I interned at ‘The Garden’ in my current department. Upon returning to York, I took classes related to what I was learning during my internship.”
Tim Newman, Ph.D., is among the many sport management professors at York College that taught her how to make an impact in the sports industry.
“He is not only a great professor, but he is a great friend and mentor,” she said. “He cares about each one of his students and their success inside and outside of the classroom.”
Kerrilyn’s first challenge after graduation was finding a job. Due to her vast list of experiences and classes at York, she was able to apply for a broad range of positions. She often leaned on her former professors for support.
“You are faced with many decisions along your career path,” she said. “Having relationships with your professors is invaluable.”
Kerrilyn, who recently received her MBA in sport management from SUNY Cortland, suggests students utilize and lean on all experiences York has to offer.
“Each and every one of those experiences are resume worthy and can put you ahead of another job candidate,” she added. “Lastly, take advantage of your professors, they are amazing resources and are there to help.”
