Megan (Smith) Renninger ’04 (Salisbury, N.C.), a sport management grad with a minor in management, has been named Charlotte Motor Speedway’s 2011 Employee of the Year. The award recognizes an individual at the organization who goes above and beyond the call of duty in executing his or her responsibilities.
“I have been honored to be nominated and voted by senior management as Employee of the Year here at Charlotte Motor Speedway,” she said. “I received a trip to the NASCAR Banquet in Las Vegas, a monetary bonus and a parking spot.”

Megan joined the speedway’s staff as an intern in 2007 and continued on to become a full-time event logistics coordinator. Before joining the speedway, she was an intern at the United States Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs, Colo., with the Olympic Training Center Operations department.
“I worked closely with the training programs that held camps in our various gyms, pool or weight rooms,” she said. “I also worked with the resident athletes on their training programs, rooming assignments and daily activities. I learned important skills of teamwork, organization and working independently.”
At YCP, she learned that voicing her opinions could help everyone at her organization. She was also taught to work hard and that teamwork holds all things together when they have the potential to fail.
“My best classes were all sport-related because the professors kept me engaged with real-time events and examples,” Megan said. “Dr. Tim Newman and Dr. Mary Van Dyke allowed me to think on my own, but were still available for advice and guidance when needed.”
She reminds current students not to be afraid to start at the bottom and that hard work can and will be noticed by those around you.
“Never believe you are too good for any job, and always want to do more,” she added. “Finally, always be willing to learn. There is never a time when you will know everything, as it always changes.”
