Brian Francis Smith ’99 (Glenside, Pa.) is an English teacher by day, novelist by night.
Brian published his first novel, The Trail, Dec. 1, 2011, and is currently working on writing his second. The Trail is a horror novel about a college reunion camping trip that turns deadly when a deranged mountain man stalks two young couples.
“York College professor Colin Falck inspired my writing with his dry, sardonic humor,” he said. “I use that humor in my writing.”
In addition to his novel, Brian has written feature articles, humor pieces and reviews for various newspapers. A fond memory for him at York College was writing for The Spartan, the College’s newspaper.
“Writing for The Spartan was the first time I got to see my name next to an article,” he said. “It was a little ego boost. Seeing your name on the cover of a book is even better.”
He reminds students thinking about writing a novel that the odds of getting a book published are roughly 20,000 to 1.
“This may seem impossible, but it happened to me, and it can happen to you too,” he added.
