Caitlin Koch ’09 (York, Pa.) has facilitated student success through her teaching.
Caitlin, a secondary education mathematics grad, is in her fourth year of teaching middle school math at Helen Thackston Charter School in York, Pa.
Last year, students in Caitlin’s classes averaged an increase of 20 percent on their eighth grade assessments from the beginning of the year to the end, as tracked by a program implemented by her charter.
“I discuss classroom management and teaching techniques with the network of professionals I made while a student at York College,” she said. “This has contributed to my early success in the classroom.”
Lorie DeMarco is just one of the York College professors that has made a lasting impact on Caitlin.
“She has been a guiding light since my freshman year of college,” she said. “She helped me through one of the toughest experiences for a student -- the job hunt.”
Caitlin believes that students pursuing a career in education can do things now to set themselves apart from others before graduation.
“Be personable and outgoing during your student teaching, and take initiative in the classroom,” she said. “The cooperating teachers will appreciate your ambition.”
