Chris Banker ’12 (Millville, N.J.) secured a management position at one of the finest motorsports facilities in the country less than a year after graduation.
As manager of communications at the New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP), Chris is responsible for developing and maintaining good working relationships with the media, including national publications, trade magazines and radio/television outlets, while managing media-related events.
“I spent my college summers working in the Track Operations department at NJMP,” he said. “After graduation, I had a full-time position as a rental sales associate. After proving myself as a reliable member of the team, a few months later I was offered my current position.”
While at York, Chris, a public relations grad, also interned with Comcast Spectacor, a Philadelphia-based sports and entertainment firm. There, he learned a lot about operating and marketing major organizations.
“I use a lot of what I learned at York every day,” he said. “Professor Hope Carroll was a great internship advisor and provided a lot of great tips that enhanced my work experience.”
Chris believes both internships and networking can set students up for success in the public relations world.
“It’s cliché and you hear it all the time, but networking is important,” he said. “I met people during my internship in Philadelphia that had close ties with my general manager here in New Jersey. I’m not sure how much that played into my hiring, but it’s always good to build those relationships because you never know where they could lead.”
