David Block ’07 (New York, N.Y.) is the associate producer of The Maury Show, the number one syndicated daytime television talk show in almost all key demographics.
“Getting to produce television in front of a live audience is a constant thrill,” he said. “You get butterflies every time you do a show, and the rush never goes away.”
David is no stranger to producing. While at York College he produced live television in instructors Lowell Briggs and Robert Mott’s classes.
“Getting the chance to produce live television in my communication classes gave me the organizational and structural skills to succeed in the industry at a higher level,” he said.
David also speaks fondly of Professor Ian Olney, Ph.D. “Both Olney and Briggs passion for what they were teaching was contagious, and they constantly pushed their students to expand their minds,” he said.
While at York, David was an intern at Fox43 and worked directly with anchors and producers. “I had the chance to write copy and learn how a news operation functions on a daily basis,” he said.
After graduating, David interned in the corporate communications division at the NASDAQ Stock Market in New York. “This internship gave me the opportunity to work on several CNBC shows, as well as coordinate opening/closing bell ceremonies,” he said.
David reminds students that networking is essential to your career. “It’s not so much about what you know, than who you know, when looking for a job,” he said. “Take advantage of every opportunity to meet people who work in your field.”
