Lindsay Bonsall ’04 (Los Angeles, Calif.), a freelance television producer, took risks that paved the road for her future.
“Taking risks is a huge part of this industry,” she said. “I moved to LA without a job, a car or an apartment. I made my own contacts, and that led to some amazing jobs.
Since moving to the West Coast in January 2007, she has worked on many different shows including Kid Nation, LA Ink, The Doctors, Supernanny, The World’s Strictest Parents, Coming Home, Tanked and Why Not? With Shania Twain. She just finished producing Lovetown USA, which is on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
“My greatest personal accomplishment when it comes to my career has been meeting and getting to work with Oprah Winfrey,” she said.
As a mass communication major at York College, Lindsay learned quickly that she wanted a challenging career in show business.
“Professors Robert Mott and Ed Debes made their production classes fun and exciting, and that made me realize that this was the career for me,” she said. “Even though my career has had its ups and downs, it has always been fun.”
Lindsay also learned that success in this industry is all about who you know and who you network with.
“These people will help you get your first job, but only hard work and logic will get you hired on another show,” she said.
Lindsay reminds current students that everyone seems to know everyone in all industries.
“Speak well of people and treat everyone with respect,” she added. “They might be your boss one day.
