In 2011, Vanessa DeLisio '08 (York, Pa.), along with her friend Jennifer Schreiber ’08, opened The Green Bean Roasting Company in downtown York.
“This past January we celebrated our first year in business,” said Vanessa. “Business is continuing to grow as we solidify our place downtown as the go-to destination for freshly roasted coffee with a friendly, inviting atmosphere.”
It was always a dream and lifelong goal of Vanessa’s to open her own business. She started on her entrepreneurship journey with a lemonade stand when she was only 8 years old.
“I always knew that I wanted to be my own boss,” she said. “When I moved to York for college, I got a job at a cafe downtown and fell in love with the coffeehouse atmosphere and the world of coffee and tea.”
Her public relations major at York College gave her a solid foundation in communications that has helped her dream become a reality.
“My speech classes helped build my confidence to speak to customers,” she said. “I also learned to have a great, detailed business plan, and to stand behind the brand we created with confidence.”
Tom Hall, Ph.D., also taught her skills that are essential for the business world and that can easily be applied to daily life.
“He stressed the need for determination and to think outside of the box,” she said.
While Vanessa is busy spreading the word about her growing business, she reminds students that have a dream or goal to start a business, not to give up.
“Resources are available to you if you do a little digging,” she added. “I developed a lot of relationships with people in York. It is very important to make a good impression and get contact information. And don’t forget a good handshake!”
