In his career as a marketing associate with SEER Interactive, Adam Melson ’05 (Philadelphia, Pa.) has seen the company grow from just six employees to nearly 50 over the past few years.
Adam currently manages a team of 10, whose goal is to increase online visibility, traffic and sales for the company’s clients. Following the most current Search Engine Optimization (SEO) practices, Adam and his team make sure client’s websites are built correctly, use the most effective terminology and have enough outside links on other sites. “Basically, we help websites rank better in search engines when people search for related products or services,” he explained.
Working in a growing industry like SEO, and at such a quickly growing company, has provided Adam with plenty of invaluable experience, but his first hands-on experience occurred while he was studying marketing at York College.
Adam’s most memorable professor at York was Thomas Lepson, Ph.D. “Dr. Lepson provided hands-on marketing experience,” Adam recalled. “I remember watching focus groups, really digging into real business issues and learning how a marketing solution is found.”
One simple but crucial lesson Adam learned from all of his experience, both in and out of school: “Hustle beats ivy league any day.”
“When you’re applying for a job, don’t just say what you can do, but come in with examples of what you’ve done,” he advises. “Read press releases and know your future employer’s website. If you take the time to know a lot about the places you’re applying, they’re going to know you’ve got hustle. This will automatically set you apart from the majority of people applying.”
