Lorraine Marie Burr Prete ’82 (Mount Airy, Md.), an award-winning attorney, always looks to explore her options and strive for better things.

While majoring in sociology at York, she had an internship at West Manheim Township.

“Internships can teach you what you want to know and what you don't expect,” she said. “I was in this internship due to my Public Administration minor and discovered that I did not want a regular desk job.”

After graduation, she realized that in order to make the most out of her education, she needed to obtain a higher degree. She decided to pursue a degree at the George Mason University School of Law. “When I graduated from George Mason, I was not planning to ever practice Family Law,” said Lorraine. “However, after a one-year clerkship with the Circuit Court of Frederick County, I knew where I should be.”

Lorraine, a partner at Kaslick, Prete, and Kelly, LLC, received the #1 Attorney’s Attorney for Domestic Relations award in November 1999 through November 2009.

“My greatest career accomplishment was receiving that honor in Frederick Magazine,” she said. “It was wonderful to be acknowledged by my peers and have them recommend me to their family and friends.”

Nearly 30 years since graduating, Lorraine still has fond, clear memories of her time at York.

“Dr. Edward Smith guided me into my major in his Introduction to Sociology course without even realizing it,” she said. “In addition, my second minor in psychology has been extremely helpful when dealing with families in crisis. And I found that the Behavioral Sciences department gave me a good basis for the type of law I chose to practice.”

She also recalls her extracurricular activities that included the Model U.N., Student Senate and Pre-Law Society, as well as several intramural sports such as volleyball and basketball.

“Take advantage of all the opportunities at York,” added Lorraine. “It is important to appreciate all aspects of your education while you are there.”
