Secondary Education English Major

The Secondary Education English major is designed to prepare students for a career in teaching English at the secondary school level. This major provides instruction and practical experiences to prepare you for the responsibilities and rewards of teaching students in high school. The major also provides both education and practical experiences to determine effective instructional approaches in the teaching of particular components of the secondary school curriculum: language study, reading, literature, writing, listening and speaking.

Careers in Secondary Education English

While the English courses develop knowledge and skills in the fields of Literary Studies and Writing, the Education courses focus on the effectiveness of the teacher’s methods and on the value of the students’ learning experiences. The knowledge and skills garnered by students will help in their pursuit of various career options in high schools. Graduates in Secondary Education English can pursue careers as:

  • Drama instructor
  • Literature instructor

Alumni Story

Amanda Zimmerman Amanda Zimmerman ‘06 (York, Pa.) attributes much of her current success to the many outstanding professors she studied with at York College.

With dual degrees in Spanish and secondary education English, Amanda went on to become a Spanish teacher at Northeastern High School in Manchester, Pa., where she also serves as a curriculum council member, National Spanish Honor Society advisor and chair of world languages, among other roles.
