Teacher preparation programs in Pennsylvania are required to assess candidate skill levels in reading, mathematics and writing. To that end, Pennsylvania uses the Pre-service Academic Performance Assessment or the PAPA exams. The PAPA exams are required of all teacher preparation candidates. Students will take this series of exams traditionally during the first semester sophomore year. Transfer students need to see the coordinator of field services to determine at what point you should be taking the PAPA exams.
