Graphic Design

Posters. Publications. Websites. Animation. Unlimited ways for you to make your mark.

Do you find yourself doodling all the time, researching the latest technology or selecting items that are bright in color? Good news! These are some of the traits and skills that it takes to be a graphic designer. At York College, you will learn not only about the tools and techniques, both traditional and digital, necessary to make your ideas come to life, but also the ways in which your work relates to our culture and society.

The Graphic Design major combines studio work, design theory and criticism, and history with York College’s strong academic curriculum to provide you will the knowledge you’ll need to become a successful professional.

10 things that differentiate our graphic design program

  • Individuality

We support it, foster it, champion it in our students. A lot of other schools send students out the door with cookie-cutter, faculty-driven projects in the portfolio. None of that stuff here.

  • Actual Degree in Graphic Design

Most BAs in Graphic Design are actually a BA in Art with a “track” in Graphic Design, which translates into 4 or 5 courses in design. Ours is an actual BA in Graphic Design, intensively focused on Graphic Design content from day one. And there's room to take an additional 18 credits of art outside of GD requirements to add to the skill set. Courses include Jewelry, Letterpress, Printmaking, Book Arts, Hand Lettering, Illustration, Photography and Sculpture.

  • Many Interesting Minors

Students can add an academic minor to their degrees, unlike in art schools. Entrepreneurship, Professional Writing, Marketing, Advertising... just to name a few that make students more marketable.

  • Letter Press

YCP houses the region's finest, most comprehensive and functioning letterpress studio at its downtown arts location, Marketview Arts. Historic presses and type abound, with opportunities to learn hands-on printing, just like Mr. Gutenberg did. Letterpress knowledge is very hot with employers. No school in the region has this kind of dedicated set up and faculty expertise.

  • Opportunity to spend a semester abroad in Milan

YCP has an official agreement with NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti) in Milan, Italy, one of the world’s top design cities. Students study Graphic Design in the spring semester of the junior year, and it fits seamlessly into the Graphic Design course progression. There are many study abroad programs in art, but are usually strictly Fine Arts oriented. Very few are focused in Graphic Design.

  • The Appell Fellowship

Graphic Design or Fine Art graduates of YCP can apply for this competitive one-year endowed fellowship, during which they have the opportunity to practice art and design full-time. It includes an apartment and a studio space at the Marketview Arts building, as well as a stipend for living expenses. It gives the artist a chance to work, network and develop as a professional. There are 4-5 additional studio-only fellowships awarded as well.

  • AIGA Student Group

Not all programs have an AIGA student group. And YCP’s is active and vital in the program. Affiliated with Central PA AIGA (American Institute of the Graphic Arts), YCP Graphic Design majors are required to join as juniors and encouraged to join as freshmen. It’s an organization that focuses on professional development, networking for internships and jobs, events and conferences. Members’ portfolios are included in AIGA’s portfolio database, as well as access to exclusive job listings. When an employer sees a student is an AIGA member, that says they are serious about graphic design.

  • Opportunities to show your work "From Day One"

A lot of schools focus on competitive opportunities for upperclassmen only. At YCP, Freshmen establish an online presence which they continue to add to throughout the 4 years. All students qualify to enter the Annual Juried Student Graphic Design or Fine Art exhibition, and have their work selected by nationally known visiting artists.

  • Access to Expert Advising

Art majors are advised by art faculty who know them, support them and follow them throughout their 4 years at YCP. They not only help with the next semester’s schedule, but also with internships, freelance advice, and job searches.

  • Unlimited Access

24-hour, 7-day access to campus labs and studios, even during breaks.
