Pre-Medical Studies Faculty Committee

The Committee for the Health Professions is composed of five faculty members who serve as advisors for students wishing to pursue health-related careers in medicine, dentistry, optometry, etc.  Students are encouraged to meet with their Pre-Health Advisor to ensure they are on the corrrect path for their chosen field of interest.

Kathleen M. Halligan, Ph.D., Committee Chairperson, Colorado State University. Halligan teaches Organic Chemistry I and II, Advanced Organic, Chemistry Literature Colloquium and Independent Study. Her plant natural products research and organic syntheses are targeted toward the discovery of novel medicines in the treatment of malaria, Chagas’ disease, leishmaniasis, cancer and HIV.

Wendy Boehmler, Ph.D., Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. Boehmler teaches Biology I, Neurobiology and Senior Thesis. She is interested in using zebrafish as a genetic model to provide insight into dopamine neurotransmission and related neurological disorders such as schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease.

Ronald C. Kaltreider, Ph.D., Dartmouth College. Kaltreider teaches Biology I, Introduction to Scientific Research, Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology and Senior Thesis. His interests are in diabetes and cancer research with a particular focus in elucidating the molecular mechanism by which agents may potentiate or inhibit these processes.

Deborah D. Ricker, Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University. Ricker teaches Biology I, Introduction to Scientific Research, Reproduction and Developmental Biology and Senior Thesis. She studies reproductive biology with an emphasis on male fertility and embryo development.

Jeffrey P. Thompson, Ph.D., Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. Thompson teaches Biology I, Biochemistry, and Senior Thesis. His cancer therapy research is based on development targeted delivery of cytotoxic compounds that “seek and destroy” cancer cells.
