York College—York Hospital Evidence Based Practice Collaboration: Connecting YCP Students to the Real World

York Hospital staff nurses pose with YCP nursing students.Professors Jeanie Bachand, Karen March and Linda Pugh are leading a collaborative program that links our students with nurse clinicians at York Hospital.

This innovative program offers our students the opportunity to work with nurses who raise questions that stem from their clinical practice, to explore what is “best practice” based on review of research and related findings. Groups of students met several times during the semester with clinical nurses. Examples of the initial topics for the project are best practices to prevent pressure ulcers, music therapy for surgical GI patients, a caring environment and best practices to screen for MRSA in an acute care facility.

The collaborative project has since expanded to include more student/clinician groups. These projects are presented by students during Student Scholar’s Week.

Other Research Projects

Faculty member Dr. Linda Pugh, FAAN (Fellow of the American Academy Nursing, the highest “rank” in Nursing), does research on breast feeding.

Faculty member Dr. Lisa Ruth-Sahd involves student nurses on whatever research study she is conducting, giving students the opportunity to become published as co-authors before graduation.

Students in the master's degree curriculum prepare a journal article as part of their class requirements. A number of these articles have been published in nursing journals. Here are a few samples:

  • Helping Your Patient after Breast Reconstruction
  • Superior Vena Cava Syndrome
