Chromatography and separation of analytes are the most important analytical techniques since samples generally require separation prior to complete analytical analysis. Our abilities to separate liquids in the analytical lab currently includes Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS), Ion Chromatography (IC), Gas Chromatography, and Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). These techniques are described in more detail below. We just completed the purchase of a new LC/MS, and upgraded both our GC and GC/MS capability. Upgrades and additions to these instruments are listed in the ten year purchase plan so that we are able to remain current and expand our analytical capabilities. See the Chemistry Instrumentation Facillities page for more detail.
Computer Science and Engineering Facilities
The Kinsley Engineering Center, dedicated in June 2008, is 43,000-square-foot learning center that houses the various engineering and computer science disciplines under one roof. The college purposely designed a facility to house interrelated disciplines in order to foster interactions and cross-disciplinary projects among the various technical majors. This interaction at the undergraduate level gives York College students a better educational experience and enhances their marketability.
The Kinsley Engineering Center contains state-of-the-art laboratories, engineering laboratory equipment, computers, and design facilities including:
Also included are a large project workspace where students can design, build and test large-scale projects and foster interaction with local industry, and a large common area where the students from various majors can go to study, interact, work on collaborative research projects or just relax.
The computing facilities at York College are open, modern, and easily accessible.
Every domicile has high-speed access to the campus network and the Internet, and each student receives a personal account allowing unlimited access to each. Each year, York College purchases new computers to replace one-third of the computers on campus. Numerous computer labs located throughout the campus assure easy and certain computer access. York College's Information Technology Department supports Windows, UNIX/Linux, and Macintosh platforms.
