Facilities

The Department of Biological Sciences is excited to be an integral part of the York College 2007-2012 Strategic Long Range Plan.  In this Plan, the Department anticipates the complete renovation of our six existing laboratory facilities.  In addition, we plan to construct two new labs, one for Aquatic Biology and one for Terrestrial Ecology, as well as a contemporary new tissue culture facility, a spacious new greenhouse, and a dedicated student lounge/conference area.

One of the strongest attributes of our Biology program is our commitment to research and hands-on laboratory experiences.  Not only are all Biology majors required to complete a capstone Senior Thesis research project, but also the major is filled with approximately 15 lab courses in Biology and related sciences.  Our graduates leave York College with the confidence necessary to engage in the scientific process, whether they are designing and conducting experiments, critically analyzing data, or exploring ways in which research outcomes can be applied.

To support this mission, we are dedicated to providing our students with access to state-of-the-art equipment in our laboratories.   We are fortunate to have high-quality microscopes in each lab, tissue culture capabilities, chromatography equipment, spectrophotometers, scintillation counters, high speed centrifuges, thermal cyclers, and a wide assortment of electrophoresis, blotting and imaging equipment.

In addition, all of our Biology laboratories are equipped with wireless computer technology, allowing students to access the campus network and input and analyze data directly in the lab.  Using our collection of 35 laptop computers, this wireless remote access is an impressive display of our technological capabilities.

All of our facilities are used in conjunction with our courses for both majors and non-majors, as well as in the pursuit of research.  Because of this modern approach to science education, graduates of our program are routinely in high demand for careers in lab science.  Time and again employers return to York College seeking biology students for entry level professional positions in academic, clinical and pharmaceutical research.
