Academic Departments
Physical Sciences
Students who pursue a major in the Physical Sciences Department gain the skills demanded in today's highly technical world.  We prepare students for careers in scientific and/or technical fields by developing their professional fitness, their proficiency with the problem solving techniques of mathematics and science, and their expertise in using modern equipment and software.  Our major programs also incorporate a variety of out-of-classroom learning experiences such as co-ops and internships with our partners in local industry.

To successfully complete a major in this department requires dedication and hard work. One reward for this effort is a key that opens the door to the technical/professional world in business or industry, in education, or in graduate school.

Spring 2009 Textbook List

MAJORS IN PHYSICAL SCIENCES

Chemistry
With a major in Chemistry, you gain knowledge of the workings of the world at a molecular level. You learn to solve laboratory problems and apply chemical principles and procedures in laboratories and businesses. As a graduate, you'll be prepared for many exciting careers or to continue your education in graduate school or medical or dental school.  For in-depth information on the Chemistry Program and the Chemsitry Industry Advisory Council (CIAC), please visit the Chemistry Program Site.

Clinical Laboratory Science
Learn the technical knowledge and lab skills needed to examine and analyze patient samples for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment of disease. This hands-on program combines formal academic education and clinical education in a hospital-based laboratory science program.

Computer Science
Are you a problem solver? Computer Scientists are problem solvers who study algorithms and the issues involved in implementing them. In this major, you'll study computer languages and systems, the methods used to develop and specify algorithms, and their applications in business, research, and government.  For in-depth information on the Computer Science program, please visit the  Computer Science Site

Electrical & Computer Engineering
Do you like to improvise, invent, and build things? Are interested in computer technology, electronic devices, and power, communication, and control systems? This program gives you two ways to put your interests to work.  For in-depth information on the Engineering  program, please visit the Engineering Site

Engineering Management
Prepare for a management career in businesses that emphasize technology, manufacturing, or construction.

Forensic Chemistry
In this applied Chemistry major, you build the skills to examine and analyze evidence using a chemist's sophisticated instrumentation and analytical techniques. The curriculum emphasizes both the recognition of physical evidence and the chemistry-based methods to determine its true identity and perhaps its origin.

Mathematics
The language of the sciences demands adherence to precise logical structure and expertise in problem solving. A degree is math opens doors to an exceptional range of opportunities in actuarial science, business, industry, government, and education, as well as research, science, and graduate study.  For in-depth information on the Mathematics program, please visit the Mathematics Site

Mechanical Engineering
Do your interests include computers, machines and mechanical devices large or small?  As a mechanical engineering student, you'll draw upon mathematics and science to design machines, systems, and processes of all types in every industrial sector including energy, consumer products, transportation, and manufacturing.  For in-depth information on the Mechanical Engineering program, please visit the Mechanical Engineering Site
