Masters of Education

PROGRAM OF STUDY

The Master of Education program prepares educators for positions of administrative/instructional leadership in the public or private school setting. Currently, the Department of Education of York College of Pennsylvania offers areas of degree specialization in Educational Leadership, Reading, and a course work sequence leading to certification as Reading Specialist. Candidates for the Master of Education Degree (M.Ed.) must complete the four core courses as well as the program of study developed for their area of specialization.

All M.Ed. degree candidates are required to attend the orientation session offered during the session they enroll in their first graduate level course. One orientation will be conducted in each summer, fall, and spring session. An M.Ed. Program Orientation Session introduces students to the program, degree and certification requirements, program resources, the electronic portfolio, as well as the professional internship, to name a few. Professional collaboration is emphasized in the M.Ed. program, and this orientation will provide an opportunity for individuals to meet with fellow students and department faculty in order to expand their collaboration network.

Candidates in the Educational Leadership program must complete a one semester (3 credit) Administrative Internship. A two semester (2 credits each semester) option is also available. In as much as the Internship is a capstone experience for the program, the candidate must complete all course requirements prior to beginning the Internship. Each semester of the Administrative Internship will be graded and must include activities in the elementary, middle, and high school levels. An Administrative Internship Manual may be obtained from the Director of the M.Ed. program.
