Sport Management

The Sport Management major provides professional preparation for jobs in the 20th largest industry in the United States. The major also allows the students to choose from fifteen different academic concentrations and a semester-long work experience in the field.

General Information
The Sport Management program at York College of Pennsylvania is unique because of its comprehensive and interdisciplinary design. The program recognizes the varied career opportunities in the field of sport and prepares students by requiring them to take courses reflective of the breadth of the sport management field. In addition, the program requires a nine-credit work experience and the completion of an elective sequence in an additional academic discipline.

The mission of the Sport Management program encompasses the following: to provide an environment rich in academics and in the field experiences oriented toward developing broad-based leadership skills in the many areas of the sport industry, not limited to but including, management, sport media, and entrepreneurship.

The York College Sport Management program is one of only 43 undergraduate programs in the country to be approved by the Sport Management Review Council. In addition, the Sport Management Review Council has cited York's portfolio as a model for other institutions applying for program approval.

Objectives
The goals of the York College of Pennsylvania Sport Management major are to:
  • prepare students for management positions in the various segments of the Sport Management career field.
  • provide a comprehensive Sport Management curriculum with an elective sequence in other academic disciplines.
  • adhere to curricular guidelines set forth by NASPE/NASSM for Undergraduate Sport Management programs.
  • develop graduates with strong communication and organizational skills in preparation for the multi-faceted prospects of working with individual clients and large groups of interested constituents.
  • provide opportunities wherein decision-making and critical-thinking skills are routinely called upon and therefore prepare students for the uncertainties and demands of real-world circumstances.
  • develop, plan, and execute sport management courses that reflect the current trends and professional practices in the Sport Management field.
  • prepare students for graduate work with a particular focus in the area of Sport Management.
  • provide practical work experiences in professional settings that are consistent with students' professional aspirations.
  • accommodate students from other disciplines who have an interest in taking courses in Sport Management.
  • cultivate a professional network of York College graduates within the field of Sport Management for the purpose of perpetuating the growth of the program, work experience sites, and employment opportunities for Sport Management majors.
  • maintain a strong strategic planning component focusing on emerging trends, changing demands, and employment opportunities founded in an advisory board consisting of leading professionals in the field of Sport Management.
  • become one of the top undergraduate sport management programs in the country by committing to excellence in regards to every aspect of the Sport Management program.

Within these segments, graduates are prepared for careers in marketing, media and public relations, facility management, operations management, financial operations, legal aspects, ticket operations and sales, membership service, sales, concessions manager, and equipment manager. They can also aspire towards a career goal of becoming general manager of a sport team, athletic director of a college or high school, manager of a fitness center, or president of a sporting goods firm. The opportunities are vast.

Sport Management Elective Sequences
Sport Management majors are required to complete an elective sequence in another academic discipline. An elective sequence consists of between 12 and 15 credits of coursework in one of the following areas most of which are academic minors:

Sport Management Practicum
The course is designed for the freshman and sophomore Sport Management major to learn and develop a variety of skills needed for event management and facility management. The course focuses primarily on game/event administration. Students also learn and develop supervisory skills as a result of their various roles in the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center. This is an experiential course in which the student completes the assigned tasks on campus.
