Students planning to enroll in medical school find that York College offers an exceptionally rich academic, pre-professional setting in which to pursue bachelor's degree studies. All premedical students benefit from the College's excellent programs in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics as well as highly sophisticated computer facilities and extensive database access, including the global Internet system. Students also participate in an individualized premedical advisement and recommendation process that is a proven, effective means for enhancing each student's competitiveness for medical school admission. Because of York College's tradition of affordability, students find that they can go on to medical school without the heavy debt burden often incurred at other high quality colleges. HERSHEY MEDICAL SCHOOL EARLY ASSURANCE OF ADMISSION PROGRAM OPTION
York College of Pennsylvania, York Hospital, and the College of Medicine cooperatively offer this special early assurance of admissions program for exceptionally accomplished high school seniors who maintain high scholarly achievement in college and show a continuing commitment to medicine. The program allows selected participants in the Premedical Scholars Program to be assured admission to the Penn State College of Medicine upon graduation from York College, contingent upon the student's academic performance at York College and a satisfactory Medical College Admission Test score in the junior year.

Premedical Scholars who are considered for this special option are interviewed by representatives of York College and, if considered qualified, are referred to York Hospital and the Penn State College of Medicine at Hershey for further interviews during the summer prior to their junior year. For those selected, a place is reserved in the appropriate year's entering class at Hershey provided that they maintain a satisfactory G.P.A. in premedical courses. It is expected that Hershey Premedical Scholars will explore upper division courses outside their major fields, allowing them to inculcate the values and personal skills desirable in physicians today.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Combined SAT I score of 1310 or higher at the time of admission to York College.
  • First semester junior with a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.5 at the end of the sophomore year, and completion of eight of ten required math/science courses [inorganic chemistry - 2 semesters, organic chemistry - 2 semesters, biology - 2 semesters, physics - 2 semesters, mathematics (calculus recommended) - 2 semesters], all of which must be taken at York College.
  • Preference may be given to Pennsylvania residents, due to the funding structure of the Penn State College of Medicine.

ADMISSION PROCEDURES

Spring of Sophomore Year - Finalists for the Penn State College of Medicine at Hershey Medical School Early Assurance of Admission Program are identified.

Summer prior to Junior Year - Interviews are conducted at York College and York Hospital for those Premedical Scholars being considered for early admission to the College of Medicine at Hershey. Follow-up interviews are scheduled individually at the College of Medicine for those recommended.

Acceptances are contingent upon:

  • Satisfactory performance on the Medical College Admission Test in the spring of the Junior Year. A specific score is not required: however, students are expected to perform at or above the mean score in each section when compared with the previous College of Medicine entering class. Students having one or more scores below this level receive individualized counseling from the Premedical advisor as to additional academic work that may be beneficial during the final year of college.
