Nursing
General InformationHave you ever pictured yourself helping people - really helping people? For instance, helping a mother bring a newborn child into the world...helping a heart attack victim regain consciousness...helping an emergency room staff save the life of a car accident victim...helping a teenager overcome a drug or alcohol abuse problem...helping an abused person regain self-confidence and esteem to enjoy a better life... or even helping others perform essential daily routines? Nursing is a unique healthcare discipline with a broad scope of responsibility where you can really make a difference in the quality of people's lives.
The nursing profession is a rapidly growing field with a wide variety of satisfying and challenging career opportunities. York College's CCNE accredited Baccalaureate Nursing Degree program combines the education and practical experience needed to meet the demands of this profession. York College provides a solid educational background to prepare nursing graduates to take the State Board Examination for Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.
LPN track and RN to BS in Nursing Programs
In addition to the traditional program for high school graduates, York College offers an LPN track, for the LPN who intends to earn a BS in Nursing and an RN to BS Completion Program, for the RN who graduated from a two year program and wishes to earn a BS Degree in Nursing.
Objectives
The Nursing Department at York College prepares the student for entry into professional practice and provides the foundation for graduate study.
Faculty Highlights
The faculty in the Department of Nursing are accomplished, respected experts in the field of nursing. Sixty-seven percent have earned doctoral degrees and an additional two percent are in doctoral programs. Many nursing faculty have presented research at regional, national, or international conferences and workshops; and some have been appointed or elected to professional posts at the community, state or national level. Faculty are also involved in a wide variety of community service activities and enjoy the broad cultural and recreational resources the community has to offer.
The nursing faculty are committed to challenging students intellectually and providing them with high-quality career counseling. Faculty work hard to bring the world of Professional Nursing to life in the classroom and to ensure that all students have superb clinical learning experiences in the many health care agencies in the York area.
Special Opportunities
Clinical practice begins as early as the second semester in the sophomore year and extends through the rest of the curriculum. A variety of clinical sites ranging from traditional hospitals to community based services such as Women's Shelters, Early Childhood Intervention Centers, and Self-Help Groups are utilized in order to provide exposure to daily health care situations and patient care decision-making.
In addition to the clinically based work, students in the senior year have the opportunity to do a research utilization project and to select an area of independent clinical study with a nurse mentor.
Special Facilities
The Nursing Department is located in a wing of McKay Hall. This facility houses five state-of-the-art learning laboratories, which replicate actual clinical settings: a basic nursing care lab, an adult health lab (critical care and chronic care), a maternal/ pediatric care lab, a home care lab, and a communication/mental health lab. The nursing media center and the computer laboratory provide opportunities for learning via computer-assisted programs and films. Video recording equipment is available so that students may record and critique their own performance in the process of developing communication and psychomotor skills. An inviting lounge is available in which students may socialize and purchase beverages and snacks.
