The York College Division of Music is entering a new era of excitement and change. Dynamic new music faculty members, state-of-the-art music facilities and majors in Music Performance, General Music Education and Music Industry and Recording Technology are a few of the exciting changes that await music students at York College. Our goal is to prepare music students for successful careers in their chosen field. Students are provided with a unique combination of performance opportunities and academic studies within the liberal arts tradition. A distinguished music faculty provides students with opportunities for theoretical, historical and technological areas of study. Private music lessons are offered in all areas of voice, keyboard, string, brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. Jazz studies, opera and musical theater and music tours punctuate an already rich program of study, leading to Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance and Bachelor of Science degrees in General Music Education and Music with Studies in Music Industry/Recording Technology. We invite you to contact us anytime about being part of our exciting music program.
Required Courses: Major in Music Performance (BA degree) MUSIC AUDITIONS Acceptance into the Division of Music for any of our three degree programs is by music audition only. The audition for Music Performance and General Music Education applicants is particularly important, as both degrees stress the development of strong musicianship and performance skills. Although the Music Industry and Recording Technology concentration is more technically oriented, the curriculum includes an important music studies component. Thus, an audition for acceptance into this degree program is also required to determine if the applicant has the necessary music background and experience to be successful in the pursuit of this degree. All auditions should be well prepared, demonstrating music reading skills, appropriate repertoire for one’s instrument or voice classification, performance skill and proper stage presence. For more information about specific audition requirements, the audition application form, audition dates, and music scholarship eligibility requirements, please contact Dr. Frederick Schreiner, Director, Division of Music. See Admission Procedures for specific contact information. PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES Opportunities to perform abound at York College. For the serious musician, the College Chorale, Chamber Singers, Wind Symphony, and Orchestra perform works by the great masters. The Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Percussion Ensemble offer opportunities to play and study jazz improvisation in all styles. For the music theater lover, the Opera and Musical Theater offer a unique opportunity to sing, act and dance in Broadway musicals, opera and operetta. In addition, a variety of small ensembles offer more intimate opportunities for performance.
Performing Ensembles open to all students include: Our distinguished music faculty, many of whom maintain active performing careers, bring the real world of music into the classroom and private studio. To develop your individual talents, faculty artists offer private music lessons in all string, brass, woodwind and percussion instruments, voice, piano and organ. To round out your musical experience, there are student recitals, master classes, concert artists, opera and musical theater, jazz concerts, and much more.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IN MUSIC There are a variety of academic scholarships that are available to music students, most notably, the Dean’s Scholarship (one-third tuition) and the Presidential Scholarship (one-half tuition).
