Mathematics General InformationMathematics is the language of the sciences, demanding adherence to precise logical structure, facility with symbolic formalism, and expertise in problem solving. As such, it provides a solid foundation for further academic pursuits in a variety of fields, as well as for careers in business and industry. As our society becomes increasingly complex in its technology and organization, the management of resources and information becomes more vital. Mathematics, with its abiding insistence on the understanding of structure and pattern, provides a gateway to an ever increasing array of activities which the complexity of our society dictates. See this page for more information about the Mathematics major. Required Courses Department of Physical Sciences Objectives York College's mathematics program is designed to produce graduates who can continue their careers in a variety of directions. The curriculum includes a strong component of science coupled with a broad liberal education, preparing students who wish to pursue careers in actuarial science, business, industry, government, and education, as well as more traditional academic pursuits such as research, science, and graduate study. Special Opportunities Tutoring at the Learning Resource Center and Internships Students majoring in mathematics or with strong backgrounds in mathematics are encouraged to become math tutors at the College's Learning Resource Center. Tutoring various concepts and skills reinforces and enhances the tutor's understanding while benefiting peers. Research Opportunities Students have the opportunity to conduct original research in collaboration with faculty for college credit. They can either come up with their own projects or utilize a faculty member's ideas. Current and past research areas include: Cryptology: Cryptology is the art/science of secret writing (making and breaking ciphers). It is used extensively by the National Security Agency (NSA), which is the largest employer of mathematicians in the world. Dr. Bauer has many ideas for students if they wish to pursue research in this area. In the past, students' cryptology research papers have been published in cryptologia, a peer reviewed journal published at West Point. Applied Mathematics: Applied Mathematics is defined as the use of mathematical tools such as statistics or numerical analysis to study problems from business, physics, or other areas. Students have studied encoding of video files (like MPEG), created "Virtual Fish," and programmed artificial societies. Pure Mathematics: Pure Mathematics research involves finding new solutions to problems, creating proofs, or examining mathematical methods for their own sake. Career Opportunities Students with mathematical backgrounds have the option to find employment in a wide variety of fields including:
