Mass Communication / Public Relations / Speech Communication General InformationCommunication emphasizes the theory and skills of oral, visual, and written expression which are valuable in any career. Students may pursue study in one of three majors within the discipline. Required Courses: Mass Communication Required Courses: Public Relations Required Courses: Speech Communication Department of Music, Art and Communication Career Opportunities Mass Communication Students pursuing a bachelor's degree in Mass Communication are exposed to the theoretical principles and pragmatic skills necessary for a career in the media. Exposure to audio, radio and video production, news gathering and reporting, copywriting, announcing, and field and control room equipment operation provide students with a strong foundation for broadcasting related careers, work in independent production houses, or work with corporate video production. Public Relations The bachelor's degree Public Relations provides a thorough background in the theoretical principles and the practical application of Public Relations. Coursework includes liberal instruction in using a variety of communication tactics to meet objectives for corporate, government, and not-for-profit organizations. Speech Communication The bachelor's degree in Speech Communication is for students interested in teaching in higher education, graduate school, or a variety of careers requiring interaction with the public including marketing and sales. Students are provided with the broad theoretical foundation of the discipline as well as practical interpersonal, group, and public communication skills necessary for today's organizational environment. Objectives Upon graduation, students are well-qualified in both the technical skills of their chosen major and the practical skills of effective communication in a professional and personal setting. Additionally, students are provided with a theoretical foundation in communication which is essential for future employment. Special Opportunities Students are encouraged to pursue internship opportunities as juniors and seniors at York College of Pennsylvania. These opportunities range from local, regional, and national radio and television programming and production internships to public relations experiences in local and state organizations and businesses. The Division of Communication is housed in Wolf Hall on the York College campus. The building offers two state-of-the-art video production facilities coordinated by a high-tech computer-assisted control room. Audio production facilities include two twenty-four track audio mixing rooms and Logic and Sonar nonlinear audio workstations. The Division also operates two college radio stations (WVYC-FM and WVYC-AM) housed in the Iosue Student Union. Four production/broadcast control rooms are available for station and academic coursework. The station receives 24-hour Associated Press satellite feeds. Students are encouraged to take part in the programming of the radio station in a number of capacities ranging from on-air production to management. Faculty Highlights Professor Lowell A. Briggs (M.S., Villanova University) teaches Broadcast News writing and Production, Reporting, Broadcast Performance, Documentary Storytelling; Public Relations, Crisis Communications Management, and Media Relations. He also consults and trains government agencies in Emergency Public Information and Joint Information Systems. Professor Briggs Lowell is completing his Doctorate at Pennsylvania State University. Professor Briggs is completing his 15th year preparing York College Communications students for careers in Broadcast News, Public Relations and Crisis Management. Dr. Robert Carroll (Ph.D., University of Southern Mississippi) teaches in the area of Public Relations. He has extensive experience in public relations, journalism, and advertising. He is a member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, and the Public Relations Society of America. Dr. Carroll is an accredited public relations practitioner. Professor Edward A. Debes II (Ed.S., Nova Southeastern University) teaches courses in audio production (beginning, intermediate and advanced) and human communication. He is a sound recording professional and was inducted into the Audio Engineering Society (AES) in March, 1998. Professor Debes is also a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages). Professor Debes is currently serving in the role of Communication Division Coordinator and also serves as Director of Music Industry Studies for the Division of Music. Dr. Brian J. Furio (Ed.D., West Virginia University) teaches in the area of interpersonal communication and communication theory. He is a member of the National Communication Association and the International Listening Association. Dr. Furio actively engages in corporate consulting in the area of business communication. Dr. Furio serves as Chair of the Music, Art and Communication Department. Dr. Thomas V. Hall (Ph.D., Bowling Green State University) teaches in the area of rhetoric, interpersonal, and mass communication. He is a member of the National Communication Association, Broadcast Educator's Association, and Association of Communication Administrators and actively consults in political, organizational, and media areas. Professor Robert K. Mott (M.A., Regent University) teaches in the area of mass communication-specialty video production. Professor Mott brings extensive experience to the classroom as a producer for a PAX programming affiliate. He has worked freelance for a number of different companies including ESPN 2 and the Family Channel. Professor Mott is currently developing two television shows for release. He is also a member of the Broadcast Education Association. Professor J. Hope Carroll (Ed.S., University of Louisiana at Monroe) teaches writing and design courses in the public relations program. She previously taught at the University of Southern Indiana and the University of Louisiana at Monroe and has worked as a public relations consultant. She is a member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and the Public Relations Society of America.
