Management / Marketing

General Information
Management is the process through which work is accomplished with and by the human resources in organizations. Broadly, it encompasses the major functions of setting organizational objectives and developing plans, organizing work, allocating resources, directing and leading others, and evaluating the outcomes of managerial efforts. The courses offered in the management area encompass all of these functions, and management majors will take at least a basic introductory course that covers each function. The management major allows students to choose a minor in Human Resources, Entrepreneurial Studies, or Operations Research. Students who do not choose a minor may pursue courses within the management area that fit their personal academic and career goals.

Marketing is a dynamic process by which individuals and organizations strive to anticipate and satisfy consumer and business customer needs and wants. In a free enterprise, freedom of choice society, this is accomplished through marketing research, product planning and pricing, promotion (advertising and selling), and distribution. These marketing mix decisions are made in light of today's and tomorrow's changing environment including the economy, ecology, ethics, technology, culture, lifestyle, the global market, and competition. The marketing major develops an understanding of the concepts, functions, and institutions of marketing, an appreciation of consumer orientation, insight into the B2B market, and the ability to analyze marketing problems and formulate marketing policies.

Career Opportunities
Management majors have diverse career opportunities available to them. They are well-prepared to enter corporate management training programs in banking, manufacturing, and retail management. Majors are also qualified for entry-level management positions in service organizations such as hospitals, nursing homes, large medical and legal practices, and nonprofit organizations. More specific opportunities are available to those students who pursue the various management minors. For example, students with a Human Resource Management minor are qualified for jobs dealing with employee recruitment, training, compensation and benefit administration, and labor relations. The Operations minor is useful for careers in direct supervision, purchasing, logistics, inventory management, and quality management. Students who aspire to develop or operate their own business enterprises will find that the minor in Entrepreneurship Studies will provide them with the skills and knowledge that are crucial to successful small business operation.

The Marketing major is designed to meet the needs of students planning a career in marketing. The wide range of marketing courses and electives offered by the department mirrors the wide range of occupations open to the professional marketer. Businesses employ individuals with skills and expertise in marketing as advertising copywriters, advertising strategists, product & brand managers, fashion marketers, global marketing strategists, hospitality industry marketers, internet merchandisers, internet promotion managers, logistic managers, market analysts, market researchers, product development specialists, merchandise managers, professional salespeople, resort marketers, retail buyers, retail store managers, sales managers. and tourism developers.
