History

General Information
A knowledge of the past provides us, collectively and individually, with a better sense of who we are and where we are heading. The study of history sharpens our skills as thinkers, writers, and as citizens. The fact that many corporate presidents, lawyers, judges, journalists, and politicians have majored in history is evidence of the usefulness of the skills acquired by history majors.

These skills include writing and presenting information, analyzing ideas, data and information, examining evidence including documents, texts, and interviews, seeing connections and making decisions and reflective judgments. Some leaders who have majored in history include Woodrow Wilson, Teddy Roosevelt, George W. Bush, Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, Corning CEO John Loose, to name a few.

The department offers a wide variety of courses in American and European History and other areas of the world. It also sponsors a number of student organizations and activities including a chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national honor society for history majors, an undergraduate journal, Past and Present, and special interest clubs. Opportunities are provided for individual growth and practical experience through internships and independent studies.

Objectives
The goal of the York College History program is to prepare students for a variety of career opportunities in both public and private sectors and to awaken in them the joy of life-long learning so that they can be effective members of the myriad of communities in which we live. It also offers the opportunity to teach at the secondary level for students who desire to combine an education curriculum with a history major.

Career Opportunities
A major in history prepares for a wide variety of career opportunities in both the private and public sectors. Students majoring in history acquire writing, speaking, research and analytical skills that aid in problem solving, planning, and management. It offers a solid preparation for almost any business career in an age of rapid change. It is also an excellent major for students who intend to go to law school. Many history majors gravitate towards traditional career tracks in teaching (at all levels), archival management and public history or museum work.

History majors can be found in all professions including banking, finance, insurance, publishing, journalism, business, management, investigations, the mass media, communications, government, law, politics, public relations, museums, and public history, to name just a few. Many choose to refine and enhance their skills by pursuing graduate study.

Special Opportunities
Internships are available in museums, archives, historic sites, and public history projects.
  • Glatfelter Trust Award - This is a grant of up to $1,000, awarded to one or two students annually, usually seniors, who have shown high proficiency in either American history courses or American political science courses. • Study Abroad Program - The department encourages students to take advantage of opportunities to study abroad, either through York College or other institutions.
  • Student Organizations and Activities - The Department sponsors a general interest club for history and political science majors. The club publishes Past and Present, an annual journal of student writing and research; it sponsors speakers; and it organizes campus-wide discussions on both historical and contemporary issues. In addition, members of the club participate in intercollegiate forums and competitions. These have included the Model Arab League, the Model United Nations (held in New York City), and the European Union Simulation (held in Washington, D.C.).
