The York College Galleries are dedicated to providing opportunities to explore the visual arts in a setting that promotes learning, discovery, and appreciation. The galleries were established in 1994 as the centerpiece of the Music, Art, and Communications Center, which was rededicated in July 2006 as Evelyn and Earle Wolf Hall. Comprising two adjacent galleries, the Cora Miller Gallery and the Brossman Gallery, these exhibition spaces serve the College, the City of York, and the communities of southcentral Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. The exhibition calendar features a varied program of nationally-touring exhibitions and invitational shows as well as faculty and juried student shows. Artist and curator lectures, workshops, book signings, and other events complement the exhibition schedule.

Terragraph: Clay Monotypes by Mitch Lyons
Sept. 4 - Sept. 27, 2008

Opening Reception: Thurs., Sept. 4 2008 5 - 7 p.m.

Since 1968 Mitch Lyons has been pioneering the making of images onto clay slabs. The results are stunning monoprints characterized by saturated color and expressionistic texture, with references to organic forms and geometric patterns. Sometimes ghost images from previous prints appear in a work, presenting a history of his enigmatic image vocabulary. "Making marks in a wet clay slab slowly changed my way of thinking analytically to a more surrealist method," says Lyons. "This allowed me to let go of all/most controls of the conscious mind, and to move towards the mysterious and boundless world of images of the subconscious, bringing them to the surface."

Mitch Lyons earned his MFA in Ceramics from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and his BFA in Graphics from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He has held over 100 workshops on his unusual technique over the past ten years. Lyons' clay monoprints can be found in many private and public collections throughout the United States, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Woodmere Museum, American University, and the University of Delaware.

Mitch Lyons has exhibited his work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Noyes Museum in New Jersey, Kalmar Lans Museum, Sweden, and the Vonderau Museum in Fulda, Germany. Lyons received a Visual Arts Grant from the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts and he has taught at Westchester University, Moor College of Art, Rowan University, Alfred University, and the University of Delaware.

The Pennsylvania Arts Experience Artist's Trail:
Works by Trail Artists of the Susquehanna Valley
Susquehanna Valley Artist's Trail Studio Portraits by Bill Simone

Jan. 22 - Feb. 28, 2009

Opening Reception: Thurs., Jan. 22, 2009 5 - 7 p.m.

York College is proud to host two exhibitions simultaneously featuring the artists of the newly-formed Susquehanna Valley Artist's Trail. Located along the Route 30 - Route 113 corridor and traveling through three scenic river valleys (Susquehanna, Brandywine/Schuylkill, Delaware) the Pennsylvania Art Experience is one of a growing number of artist's trails being developed throughout the state. Its goal is to forge connections between art-minded tourists and the many accomplished artists located along these designated rural roadways by providing exclusive access to their studios as well as to the many museums, galleries and other cultural and heritage destinations in the region. This exhibit examines a sampling of works by several of the artists whose studios are located on the Susquehanna Valley Portion of the trail. Working in a wide variety of media and approaches including painting, printmaking, needle arts, ceramics, and sculpture, many of these artists have both national and international reputations.

The second exhibition features a series of remarkable studio portraits of Pennsylvania Arts Experience artists taken by renowned photographer Bill Simone. Each portrait, in some cases constructed from multiple shots taken on location, provides not only an intimate portrait of each artist but also gives insight into the artist's creative persona. Each artist's working process is presented by way of a detailed documentation of his or her work space and environment, and materials and methods used.

Based in Lebanon, PA, Bill Simone began taking photographs when his parents gave him a camera in his senior year of high school. "So you can take pictures when you go away to college" they said. Things do not always go as planned, and after ten years of working, sometimes in photography and sometimes not, he left his full-time job to open what is now Simone Associates Inc, one of the premier photographic illustration studios in the Mid-Atlantic region.
