The English and Humanities Department annually offers a number of departmental scholarships and awards to students who have demonstrated excellence in their work in departmental programs.

Trevethan Memorial Fellowship

The Ruth E. Trevethan Memorial Endowment Fund was established in 1972 from donations of Ann Lee Trevethan, niece of Ruth E. Trevethan (1908-1972), who was a member of the faculty of York Junior College from 1962 to 1972 and taught writing and American literatureÑespecially the work of Emily Dickinson. The Trevethan Memorial Endowment Fund supports an annual fellowship that is given to a York College student pursuing a major in the English and Humanities Department who has demonstrated outstanding academic performance.

To be considered for the Trevethan Memorial Fellowship, students must have:

  • Completed at least 75 semester hours at York College
  • Completed a minimum of six courses in a major in the English and Humanities Department
  • Achieved at least a 3.75 grade point average in their major courses
  • Secured the sponsorship of one full time member of the English and Humanities Department
  • Submitted a brief narrative describing how the applicant has demonstrated outstanding academic performance (i.e., course work, Scholarship Day activities, recognition from an external organization, etc.)

Benjamin M. McKulik Memorial Scholarship

The Benjamin M. McKulik Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Aneita McKulik in honor of her husband Dr. Benjamin McKulik, a longtime member of the English and Humanities Department. The scholarship is awarded to an English major who has shown scholarly talent in writing about literature.

To be considered for the Benjamin M. McKulik Memorial Scholarship, students must have:

  • Completed at least 75 semester hours at York College
  • Declared a major in English
  • Achieved at least a 2.5 grade point average
  • Secured the sponsorship of one full time member of the English and Humanities Department
  • Submitted a critical essay from a course taught by their faculty sponsor

Carraway Scholarship

The Carraway Scholarship Fund was established by Lisa and Kenneth Carraway to recognize full-time students pursing a major in Professional Writing.

To be considered for the Carraway Scholarship, students must have

  • Declared or will declare a major in Professional Writing
  • Achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average (or the high school equivalent of a B average)
  • Supplied a recommendation of their first-year writing professor or high-school English teacher
  • Submitted a brief narrative in which the applicant reflects on their desire to study professional writing and their perceptions about such a course of studies
  • Submitted a sample of writing, along with all process materials produced in conjunction with writing that piece (mid-process drafts, reflections, etc.)

German American Society of York Scholarship

The German American Society of York Scholarship Endowment Fund was created by E. C. (Woody) Spangler (President of the German American Society of York), to award an American citizen, German language student, funds to purchase books.

To be considered for the German American Society of York Scholarship, students must be American citizens, be a full-time matriculated student (at least 12 credit hours per semester), and must be pursuing a minor in German. Scholarships may be awarded to first year students who have attained a satisfactory secondary school average and show promise of achievement, and to upper class students who have maintained a minimum grade point average of 2.5. Students who wish to be nominated for this scholarship should identify themselves to any German language professor or the chairperson of the English and Humanities Department.

Helen Miller Gotwalt Drama Award

This award was first endowed in 1990 through the initiative of Mrs. Kitty Peters with funding from Peter Newcombe to recognize students whose contributions to YCP's student theatre toupe Players have been outstanding. Mrs. Gotwalt, a long-time friend of Mr. Newcombe's family, received the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters during the College's December, 1988, Commencement exercises. Mr. Newcombe stipulated that income from the endowed principal be used annually to honor students participating in dramatic productions at York College. The recipient is selected by the Theatre Director.

Nelie Phillips Brown Memorial Award

This award is given to a deserving student for excellence in English literature. The Chair of the English and Humanities Department shall make the selection using criteria which emphasizes the number of English literature courses taken by the student and academic achievement in these courses.

This award serves as a memorial to Carol Brown Morrison's mother, Nelie Phillips Brown. It is not to be a cash award. The principal was $1,000.00. Carol Morrison wrote the department explaining that her mother Nelie (pronounced Neelie) Phillips Brown, was interested in and enjoyed reading and reviewing books. She belonged to several book clubs, one of which was a Shakespeare Club. She wished to remember her mother this way. Carol's husband was a professor emeritus of the College (James Morrison).

Helen M. McNitt Scholarship

This scholarship fund was created by the Board of Trustees in 1972 to honor Helen M. McNitt for her long service to the College and her interest in young people. Full-time students matriculated in the English Department are eligible for consideration. The scholarship may be awarded to an entering freshman who has attained satisfactory secondary school averages and show promise of achievement, and to eligible York College students who have maintained overall minimum grade point averages of 2.5 with 3.0 in their major.
