Students in both music majors perform on a student recital at least once a semester. Students polish their performance by undergoing a "recital hearing" before performing publicly. All students must also successfully present a solo recital during their senior year. Six credits with a grade of 2.5 of higher in the student's primary area of interest must be achieved prior to the recital. The music faculty attends the senior recitals to grade and record the performance.
Piano Proficiency Requirements
Music majors must meet basic piano requirements before they graduate. Sophomores generally take proficiency examinations, but students can continue to enroll in applied piano until they pass. If the student passes the exam prior to the end of their sophomore year, they can take another instrument to meet secondary instrument requirements.
Students learn how to apply their skills and master performance in the private studio. Depending on the number of credits sought, faculty privately instructs students for 12-half hour or 12-fifty minute lessons during a semester.
All music department majors and minors take an applied music final examination (jury examination) at the end of each semester. Music faculty administers the exam and provides the student with written comments on their progress. The grade constitutes 25% of the student's final grade in applied music. If the student fails to satisfactorily improve from semester to semester the committee may recommend probation. Students can be removed from probation during the following semester's jury examination if they meet the prescribed improvements. An individual may be dropped from the music or music education major if they do not shed their probationary status after a semester.
