Internship Opportunities

Fact Sheet for Employers

What is a business internship? A business internship is a short term business-related work experience designed to allow students to gain meaningful, pre-professional work experience in their field of study prior to graduation.
  1. What are the eligibility requirements?
Internships are available to students who have earned 60 or more credits and accumulated a 2.5 or higher grade point average. Approval from the Department Chair and the Academic Affairs Office must also be obtained. (Finance Internships: Students must have earned 75 or more credits.) Please review the Internship for Academic Credit  form for details.

  2. May a student in any major participate?
Students in all majors may participate. However, most organizations seek students from specific majors they feel best prepare the intern for the responsibilities of the internship position.

  3. Are internships paid positions?
Internships can be paid or non-paid positions. It is the organization’s responsibility to clarify the issue of compensation with intern candidates. Approximately 90 percent of business interns are paid for their work contributions.

  4. Do interns receive academic credits?
Students may complete two approved internships to earn a total of six credits (three credits each). Business internship credits may count as a business elective, business major elective, or free elective credits depending on the major of the student. Internship credits are billed at the regular tuition rate.

  5. What kind of time commitment is involved?
For each three credits, an intern should work approximately 120 hours spread over 10-12 weeks during an academic semester or summer.

  6. How do students become involved?
Interested students who meet the eligibility requirements should first discuss the appropriateness of seeking a business internship with their advisors. Information on specific internship opportunities is available from the Assistant Director for Internships located in Career Services.

  7. Can I find my own internship opportunity?
    Yes . . .

Program Objective
Business internships are designed to allow students to gain meaningful, pre-professional work experience in their field of study prior to graduation while establishing an effective linkage between the Department of Business Administration and the local business community.

Student Eligibility Requirements
Internship credit is a privilege extended to students who have earned 60 or more academic credits (Finance - 75 credits) and who have achieved a grade point average of at least 2.5 prior to the semester in which they apply. Approval is obtained by use of the College  "Internship for Academic Credit " form.

Academic Credits
Eligible students may earn up to six credits hours through the completion of well-structured, Department approved internships. Students may earn three credit hours during any one academic semester, or summer, by working for at least 120 hours. Further, students may not earn credit by simply continuing to work at an existing job. In the case of continued employment, the cooperating organizations must demonstrate how the students’ learning opportunities will be expanded as a result of internship participation.

Grading
All internships supervised by the Department of Business Administration are graded on a pass/fail basis.

Financial Compensation
Internships and practicums can be paid or non-paid positions. It is the organization’s responsibility to clarify the issue of compensation with the candidates. The Department prefers that interns be paid so that the work experience is as realistic as possible. However, the Department realizes that this is sometimes an impractical expectation. Approximately 90 percent of business* interns are paid for their work.

Supervision

On Site
Sponsors identify someone within their organization to act as the intern's on-site supervisor. It is the supervisor's role to direct the activities of the intern and to act as the organization's liaison with the College. The supervisor provides a description of intern responsibilities as part of the initial approval process and then, as the internship progresses, on-going feedback concerning the intern's progress and a final evaluation of the intern's performance.

Faculty
A member of the Business Administration faculty will serve as the College's supervisor of the internship experience. Normally the faculty supervisor will be the business faculty member whose area of teaching is best aligned with the duties of the intern. The Department has adopted the following guidelines as appropriate minimum faculty supervision of a business internship:
  1. an initial contact with the on-side supervisor to discuss both the intern's and supervisor's responsibilities
  2. periodic communication with the on-site supervisor as deemed appropriate by the faculty member
  3. periodic communication with the student by meeting to review a journal of internship experiences to be maintained by business interns as a record of their involvement.
