How to Become a York College Student Scholar

Information for Student Participants

 What is Students’ Scholars Week?

Student Scholars Week is a celebration of student research, research that is often the result of collaboration with faculty members.  It opens with Scholars Day, during which that rich array of research is articulated in poster sessions, oral presentations, artistic performances and exhibits, and much more.  It is a chance for those who have done serious academic work to share it with others, and the chance for all of us to learn about the engaging scholarship being produced at York College.

For more details, read our brief History of Student Scholars Day

Why participate in Student Scholars Week?

There are lots of reasons.  As a participant in Student Scholars Week, you can:

  • Publically display the results of your academic work
  • Help others to learn about the important work being done in your field
  • Demonstrate to other students the kinds of projects that make this learning environment so engaging
  • Add an important element to your résumé for future job applications or for graduate school applications
  • Forge working relationships and develop research projects with faculty members
  • Have your voice heard by others

How can I participate in Student Scholars Week?

In some cases, faculty members may ask you to consider participating in Scholars Week, based on the quality of work you’ve produced in a class or your program of study.

But you can also ask a faculty member about participating: It’s a great opportunity.

In any case:

  • Students wishing to enter a project in Student Scholars Week must have a faculty sponsor.  You will work together with you sponsor to decide on an appropriate project and create a plan to display the project.  Many participants create a poster or an oral presentation, but other formats are acceptable, such as group presentations, debates or panel discussions.

What are my responsibilities as a student?

Once you have agreed on a project with the support of your faculty sponsor, an abstract must be submitted by the deadline of April 1st.  The abstract will appear in the print and online guide for Student Scholars Week.  Once an abstract is submitted and accepted, the student and faculty member will receive an online confirmation that will include the time schedule for student presentations.

Students choosing the poster format must submit their posters to Schmidt Library by April 14th for printing.

Instructions for creating posters

  • Students should download files to a thumb drive and leave this drive at the Information Services desk.
  • After your poster is printed, you may come to Schmidt Library to review your poster, but please leave your poster at the library. Students are not required to pay for posters or hang them for display
  • All posters will be hung the afternoon of Friday, April 24th in Campbell Hall.

How can my professors help?

  • Faculty who work with you on a project will help you to make sure that your work represents a level of quality and scholarship appropriate for the event.  They will oversee your progress and provide any assistance required to translate scholarly work to a format appropriate for presentation during Student Scholars Week.  They’ll also help you stay on track with deadlines—though ultimately, this is YOUR responsibility.

Students are expected to be available on Monday, April 27th for their presentation

  • Students who present posters are required to stand next to their poster from either 10:00-12:00 or 12:00-2:00 on April 27th
  • Oral presentations are also from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.  The time for you presentation will be assigned well in advance.  Oral presentations are usually from 10-15 minutes long in order to allow for a discussion period at the end.  Usually, three to four student presentations are included on each panel.

The deadline for submitting as abstract is April 1st.
